Obstetric Care

  • At your first appointment, usually at around 8-10 weeks, you will meet Dr McCreery or Dr Ruoss and our midwives. If you have concerns prior to this appointment, please contact your local GP or you can contact your Obstetrician if there is a need to see you sooner.

    An ultrasound will be performed at your initial visit confirming the viability of your pregnancy and the due date. Your obstetrician will discuss your medical and obstetric history and go through your booking tests which can be organised by your GP or our practice.

    Aneuploidy screening for chromosomal abnormalities (eg. Downs Syndrome) and genetic screening for recessive conditions (eg. Cystic fibrosis) will be discussed and if you wish to proceed with these tests they will be organised.

    We will also discuss the schedule of visits and tests, as well as a preliminary discussion about any plans or concerns you have about your pregnancy and the delivery of your baby.

  • At each of your antenatal appointments you will have an ultrasound to ensure your baby is healthy and growing well. Appointments are usually every 4-6 weeks until you are 28 weeks when they will occur every 2 to 3 weeks until 36 weeks, and you will usually be seen weekly from then until delivery

    At any visit but especially towards the end of the pregnancy, you can discuss with your obstetrician or our midwives, any aspects of the delivery so that you can be as prepared as possible for the birth of your baby.

  • The birth of your baby is a very exciting day, but also has some potential hazards, so our aim is to facilitate a calm and straightforward delivery.  Your obstetrician and the experienced midwives on Labour Ward will be there to guide and support you throughout your delivery.

    Sometimes unexpected complications can occur and we are well equipped to deal with these or any other risk factors.  There is an operating suite available in labour ward and an ICU within the hospital.

    The hospital has an exceptional neonatal unit which is staffed at all hours by experienced paediatricians, and can care for premature babies from as young as 30 weeks gestation.

    * For obstetric care we are no gap providers with most health funds.


  • You will usually make an appointment to see your obstetrician and our midwives at around 6 weeks after delivery.  At that visit we will check on your recovery, review your pregnancy and delivery, and discuss any implications for future pregnancies.

    Prior to the 6 week postnatal visit we are still available should any problems arise.

    We will also discuss contraception options and if your cervical screening test (pap smear) is due, this can be performed.

Referrals and Intitial Tests

You will require a referral from your GP to see your obstetrician. You are welcome to make an appointment to see your obstetrician prior to seeing your GP, but you will need a referral by the time of your first appointment.

Your GP will usually organise some tests that are routine for all pregnant women although we can also order these at your initial appointment.  We would like a copy of these results forwarded to our rooms prior to your first appointment.

We will be in touch with your GP about your care throughout your pregnancy and inform them about the birth of your baby.
